Hong Kong celebrities 香港明星
If you mention 'Hong Kong stars' to most people back home they will of course mention two of Hong Kong's biggest and most recent exports, Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee (even though Lee was born in America) bringing Hong Kong cinema and music into the limelight even further. But none will know the plethora of stars way before these guys came on the scene, some of these include Zhang Guo Rong (Leslie Cheung) 张国荣, Zhou Ren Fa (Chow Yun-Fat) 周润发, Luo Wen 罗文 and Tan Yong Lin 谭咏麟 to name a few, but one who really touched the hearts in Hong Kong and China was Mei Yan Fang also known as Anita Mui.
With a career that began in her early childhood, Anita Mui was the queen of Hong Kong's pop-music industry. After she won a singing contest in 1983, her life as a pop-singer began. In the early stage of her career her image was a bit tomboy and sexy and thus crowned the "Madonna of Hong Kong", some of her songs were considered too risqué, with one of them, "Bad Girl"
"Bad Girl" or "Huai nu hai" was actually banned for airplay due to its suggestive content. She started her acting career at about the same time, usually starring with alongside Antony Chan, other successful acting partners included Jackie Chan and Leslie Cheung.
Both her singing and acting careers were a success. She won a couple of "Best Female Singer" awards in the mid-80's and her acting career's climax was winning "Best Actress" (both Golden Horse in Taiwan and Hong Kong Film Award ) in 1987 . In the early 1990's she announced her "semi" retirement from the singing industry, and founded the "Orient Star" (A copy of Planet Hollywood) restaurant with Jackie Chan, Alan Tam and others. She passed away from cervical cancer on December 30th, 2003. Many of her friends were with her in her last hours.
